Healing thru Stories: Beyond Grief & Loss – An entertaining exploration of some of life's most difficult subjects. Tom tackles the taboo topics of death, care giving and grief in a one-man performance that’s not only poignant and thought provoking, but has just the right amount of humor.
Tom’s stories share his personal experiences in attending his father’s death, his mother’s illness and the resulting grief. The show was designed to introduce concepts to those who have not yet experienced loss and provide comfort to those in grief by illustrating the universal nature of loss.
When performed live, the stories have created space where people felt safe to open up and share their own stories. People are left with new ways to think about and discuss end of life issues.
The show has been performed at various Southeast Alaska venues and is currently under contract to be performed for the Certified Nursing Assistant program at the University of Alaska Southeast. 360 North / Alaska Public Television recorded the performance in front of a live studio audience and will be broadcasting it in prime time throughout Alaska.
Tom has also written and performed other less weighty material like;
Coming Out: Stories of Action and Reaction – Originally performed with Pat McLear as; 'Two storytellers. One gay. One straight. One came out. One wasn't ready for the news'. Now performed solo as; 'Coming Out: A Straight Guys Journey to Acceptance'. These stories tell of my sister's coming out as a lesbian, the prejudices I didn't know I had and how I moved beyond them.
The show is humorous, touching and thought provoking. Originally broadcast on KTOO FM on March 3, 2014.
Tales of a Nearly Normal Alaskan - Stories from the Great Land crafted with lower 48 audiences in mind, (but they also appealed to Alaskan audiences). A portrayal of personal experience, these fun family friendly tales explore my 'Nearly Normal' Alaskan life. The show was originally performed on a cross country journey I made with my family in a mini-van and includes many of my most requested and signature stories. Definitely the most humorous of my offerings. The stories encompass the breadth of Alaskan life; from natural child birth, to wild animal encounters, to deadly cold water, placentas and how to pack a mini-van.
This show has been performed whole and in part over 20 times in eight states.
A Nearly Normal Road Trip – Two adults and two pre-teens in one mini-van for 14 weeks. We went to 22 national parks, lost seven teeth and played 8 gigs in six states. A reimagining of life on the road. This show has been performed whole and in part over 10 times in not as many states (2).
Mudrooms : Real People Real Stories. A monthly storytelling experience. Seven people, seven stories, seven minutes each. Most of these folks are your neighbors. I'm an original and still serving board member, who has been lucky enough to perform during each of our seasons. Give a listen: On the Road or Brush with Greatness
